Affective Way to Stop Procastination and Study Routine

Asalamu Alaikum !

Hope you are doing great,

Lately I realized I have been procrastinating less, alhamdulilah. So, I thought since I’ve bettered myself in this area of my life, maybe I might qualify to give advise on it? Maybe 😂

Trust me when I tell you, I can be the biggest procrastinator. Especially when it comes to assignments. When it comes to very personal things to me like cleaning, organizing, my health (excercising), family time, time for my hobbies, prayer (alhamdulilah), I never procrastinated.

However, (specifically) with my school assignments I would put off the most important projects until the last minute. Literally. My procrastination procrastinated.

To get over this I did a few key things that really made me efficiently get things done at a practical time. The main reason why I decided to take a stand against procrastination is because it really contributed to my anxiety. I’m sure it does for many as well, so..

I’ve gathered together, a few key solutions that helped me in ending my procrastination.

The science of physics recognizes two laws of inertia, both of which can be related to procrastination. No. 1, “Standing objects tend to remain stationary” and No. 2, “Moving objects tend to stay in motion.”

You want to keep moving, mentally, emotionally, or physically. If you are not doing anything, take a small mental note of the things that you need to do for the next moment.

If if you don’t do this for your days, then do you really have a purpose for your day? This is why it’s so important.

Second. I also realized it’s so important to love what you do. If you don’t love what you’re studying, it will be difficult to want to do it. My mind has zero tolerance for wanting to do things I don’t want to. So the only way to get over is loving it, Finding ways to love it, i.e fake it till you make it.

1. Don’t go to sleep without having an idea on your agenda for the next day. You are a purposeful being. Keep in mind the most important things you need to get done. So that you have a reason at least to wake up.

Take five minutes to list out the things “you were going to do tomorrow.”
If you like writing things out,a blank sheet of paper, note several important activities you are delaying or have put on hold.

That way you can always go back to it and cross things off.

2. Look at your list—and do one thing on it right now.
Put the energy you’ve been directing toward excuses into the activity you’ve been avoiding. Action eliminates anxiety.

Make the list very detailed, add in the things you have to do for school, for your health, for your shopping, for you personal goals and cross things out each time. Remember it’s the little goals that add up to the bigger one.

3. Pick a time (today) to work on the list. Make t a routine to check on that list and evaluate your entire life on that day.
If getting started is the hard part for you, set aside a designated time slot, at least 30 minutes, for work specifically on one job, project or personal goal that you’ve been “leaving until later.”

4. Quit trying to be perfect.

Perfectionism is a tool the shaytan loves to use. He used it on our parents Adam (as) and Hawwa (as) , he said they would be immortal, like the angels and gain perfection and power if they ate from the tree.

Its human perfection to want perfection. If you don’t want it, deep down the proposition of it doesn’t bother you.
So understand that what counts is quality of effort, and not perfect results. Don’t let yourself get held down with a preoccupation for perfectionism.

Perfectionism is (believe it or not) a problem. It will waste your time. In your mind you’re so busy perfecting a thing, that you end up not getting anything done at all.

5. If what you’re putting off involves other people, talk to them.
Your reasons for delaying action might be imaginary. Lack of communication often turns molehills into mountains.

6. Ask yourself, What’s the worst thing that could happen if I did this today?
Do you fear the consequences associated with the action you’ve been avoiding? The worst-case scenario most likely would be a minor inconvenience or a temporary setback.

Lastly the biggest point that drives me to complete the given task is I imagine the end result, in detail. The beautiful relaxation time that comes after it, the food I get to it, the show I get to watch, my “me time”, the family time I get to enjoy….these small moments are my motivation to keep going.

7. Imagine how you’ll feel if you don’t do things on time or ahead of time; so much pressure, worry and anxiety. Imagine how you’ll feel once you do whatever it is you’ve been postponing.
Freedom from anxiety. Freedom from nagging pressures. Freedom from self-doubt. Accomplishing put-off tasks will give you a great boost of confidence and energy.

Lastly, remember that procrastination is from the Shaytan. He makes you think you have time, when you don’t. If that isn’t enough of a motivation to stop procrastinating, I don’t know what is!
